Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. JOHN TOTTEN, M.D., was born in Madison, Ind., February 13, 1824, the fourth of twelve children born to John H. and Julia (Knapp) Totten, natives of New York. They were married in New York in 1815, moved to the city of Madison, Jefferson, Ind., in 1822, and there remained until 1840, when they moved to Henry County, Ky., and purchased land. There John H. worked at the carpenter's trade in connection with farming, until his death in 1875. His widow died in 1878. Our subject was quite young when he came to Kentucky, and received his education principally in this State. In early life he turned his attention to merchandising at New Castle, Ky. In 1842, he began the study of medicine with Dr. John F. Willett, and attended the University of Louisville in 1845-45. He then practiced his profession in Henry County until 1847, when he moved to Bethlehem, Ind., and practiced until 1851. At that time he came to his present location at Wise's Landing where he has since enjoyed the confidence and patronage of the people. His place is called "River View" and is situated on the Ohio River. April 15, 1845, he married Miss Sophia M. Black, daughter of James and Mary G. (Campbell) Black, of Bourbon County, Ky. To this union were born two daughters and one son: Mary J. and Allie B., both deceased, and John C. Dr. Totten has for many years been an active member of the Christian Church, of which his wife, who died January 21, 1882, and the two daughters were also members. The son, John C., is likewise a consistent member of the same church. Politically the Doctor is a Democrat.
