JAMES STIVERS was born in Fayette County, Ky., August 14, 1808, and was
the second of a family of ten children born to William and Mary Stivers,
natives of Kentucky.  William Stivers was a cooper by trade; came to
Kentucky about 1845, and died about 1857.  Our subject was reared on the
farm, received a common-school education, and has since devoted his time
to farming and blacksmithing.  About 1833 he purchased land near Belleview
in Henry County, settled on the same and there remained until 1850.  He
then sold his farm, moved to where he now resides, and purchased land, 158
acres near New Castle.  In 1830 he married Sarah, daughter of George
Hursman, of Bourbon County.  Three daughters and four sons were born to
their union: George, Joseph, Matthias, James, Mary, Lucy, Elizabeth.  Mrs.
Stivers died about 1845, and two years later our subject was united in
marriage with Nancy Booth, daughter of James Booth, of Jessamine County.
To this union nine children have been born: Martha, James P., Charles,
Jeptha, John, Margaret, Nancy, Fannie and Lewis.  His second wife died
in 1876.  Mr. Stivers is a Baptist in religion.
