DR. W. S. SMITH is a native of Owen County, Ky., born May 12, 1850, the
only child of William H. and Mary (Sparks) Smith.  His father was also a
native of Owen County, and was a son of Thomas S., who was a native of
England and a teacher.  His mother was a daughter of Anthony Sparks. Our
subject being left an orphan at the age  of four, was brought to Henry
County and reared by his uncle, Jesse P. Hill.  He was educated at Eminence
Seminary, and in 1873 took up the study of dentistry under William Linsey,
at New Castle.  He was associated with Dr. Linsey for about two years.
Since then he has been engaged in the practice of his profession in New
Castle, has met with success, and is looked upon as the leading dentist of
Henry County.  He was married October 18, 1877, at New Castle, to Miss
Fannie Pearce, daughter of James and Nancy (Ireland) Pearce, and six
children bless their union, two now living: Garnett H. and Nellie B.  Dr.
Smith is a Master Mason, a member of Simpson Lodge, No. 189, and has held
all the offices in the lodge except that of Worshipful Master.  He is also
a member of the I.O.O.F. New Castle Lodge, No. 107, has passed all the
chairs, and has been representative at the Grand Lodge three times.  He and
Mrs. Smith are members of the Baptist Church.  Dr. Smith is an active
member of the Kentucky State Dental Association.  He was elected vice
president in 1886, and president, by a unanimous vote, in 1887.  He is also
one of the clinical instructors in the Louisville College of Dentistry.
