His father, William, a native of Virginia, immigrated to Kentucky, and settled in Flemingsburg; he was a son of Joseph, a prominent farmer of Virginia, who fought in the war of 1812 under Gen. Nelson. Our subject was educated at Flemingsburg College and at Lebanon, Ohio, graduating from the latter institution. He then sold goods at Concord, Ky., for six months, going thence to Grayson, where he had charge of the city schools. He was next principal of Henry County College, at New Castle, and subsequently at the Normal College at Eminence. In 1860 he opened a normal school at Pleasureville, with a promise of only three pupils, and now has 110 pupils and five teachers. He has a fine school building in course of erection, which he hopes to occupy about September of this year. It will be one the finest schools in the county, and the Professor proposes to teach, in addition to the English branches, type-writing, telegraphy, etc. February 15, 1866, Prof. Secrest married Lizzie Seaton, of Green County, Ky., daughter of John and Mary (Rice) Seaton, of New Hampshire and Virginia, respectively. Five children blessed their union: John, George, Arthur, Rebecca and Sallie. Prof. Secrest is a member of the Christian Church and of the Masonic fraternity. Politically he is a Democrat.
