Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. W. C. RUSSELL was born in Shelby County, Ky., January 31, 1850, a son of Dr. Jacob and Sallie (McElwain) Russell. Dr. Jacob Russell, a son of Joel R., was a native of Maine, but left his native State when he was about sixteen years of age, and, coming to Kentucky, located in Shelby County. He taught school for a while, and then devoted his time to agricultural pursuits. He read medicine, attended lectures at Louisville, Ky., graduated with high honors, and was a prominent and leading physician up to the time of his death. Mrs. Sallie Russell was born in Kentucky, daughter of William and Nancy (Cross) McElwain. Our subject remained only a short time in his native county, removing to Scott County, where he remained two years, and then went to Henry County, where he engaged in merchandising for three years. The balance of his life has been spent in agricultural pursuits, and he has a farm of 120 acres of fine land near New Castle. He married, September 23, 1874, Mary E. Pinnell, of Oldham County, daughter of J. T. and Bettie Pinnell. Three children were born to them: Nettie B., Sallie T. and Warren L.
