Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. SAMUEL JOHNSTON was born in Shelby County, Ky., November 22, 1816, the third of twelve children born to John H. and Elizabeth Johnston. He is of the well known Virginia family of Johnstons, who immigrated to Kentucky in an early period of its history. When he was four years of age his parents brought him to Henry County, and located near where he now resides. He received but a limited education, and got his start in life by working for small wages. He has been engaged in farming and speculating in land all his life, and has been very successful, now owning upward of 3,000 acres of land in Henry and Franklin Counties. He has now retired from active duties, but his son, John T., is in charge, and conducts the business and farm as successfully as did his father; is a sober, industrious young man, and is looked upon as a leader among farmers. In 1844 Mr. Johnston married Mary J. Bailey, daughter of Squire S. and Charity Bailey, of Franklin County, Ky. Two children were born to this union: John T. and an infant. Mr. Johnston is a Democrat.
