Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. J. J. JOHNSTON was born in Henry County, Ky., August 25, 1826. His father, John H. Johnston, was a native of Nova Scotia, of Scotch descent, a farmer by occupation, and in his twentieth year moved to Ohio, took part in the war of 1812 under Gen. W. H. Harrison, and subsequently settled in Henry County, Ky. He married Elizabeth, a native of Virginia, and daughter of Capt. Thomas Johnston, who took an active part in the Revolution and the war of 1812. J. J. Johnston was reared on a farm, and is self-taught in the English, Latin, Greek and German languages, and is also self-educated for the ministry. He was president of the Carrollton Academy for two years, and for seven years presided over Ayer's Academy, of Madison County. In 1852 he began preaching as a local minister, and in 1860 was regularly ordained and became a member of the Kentucky Conference. During the late war he served as captain in the Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Federal Army, and was commissioned by Walter C. Whitaker. February 27, 1848, he married Elizabeth Kephart, a native of Maryland, and daughter of Jacob and Delilah Kephart. Mr. Johnston is a Master Mason and a member of the I. O. O. F.
