Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. JOHN M. DEMAREE was born in Henry County, Ky., August 17, 1829, a son of Samuel and Rachel (Vorhies) Demaree. His father, a native of Shelby County, Ky., moved to Henry County in 1820, and located near Pleasureville; served as magistrate of Henry County from 1825 to 1835, always followed farming, and served one year as a soldier in the war of 1812. He was a son of David Demaree, who left New Jersey in 1781, immigrated to Kentucky and settled near Harrodsburg, where he resided until 1795. He then moved to Shelby County, where he served as judge for some years. The name Demaree is of French origin and was originally spelled De Maris. Our subject was educated at the common schools, and on arriving at manhood chose the vocation of farming, which he has since followed, and now owns eighty acres of improved land near Pleasureville. From 1856 to 1859 he was also engaged in teaching school in Henry County. December 26, 1859, he was united in marriage with Mattie Ethington of Henry County, daughter of James and Elinor (Clark) Ethington. Six children were born to this marriage, viz.: Joseph E., a surveyor of Henry County; John I., engaged in the educational department, rating among the best teachers in the common schools; Samuel, Milton, Nanie E. and G. Clifton. Mr. Demaree is a Democrat. In religion he is a Baptist of the primitive order, in which church he is an elder or minister.
