Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. THOMAS COLEMAN was born in Louisville, Ky., April 3, 1837, and is a son of Thomas and Mary (Ward) Coleman. Thomas Coleman, Sr., was born in England, September 6, 1800, and in 1813 came to America with his brother, John, and located in Philadelphia, where he remained until about 1818, at which time he came to Louisville, Ky., and engaged in the stove and iron business, and was thus engaged many years. He afterward became president of the Kentucky & Louisville Mutual Insurance Company, in which capacity he served until a short time before his death, which occurred in August, 1870. Our subject was reared in Louisville, and in early life attended school at that place. He later attended college at Cincinnati, Ohio, also at Bardstown, Ky., and obtained a good education. In 1854 he went to Henry County, and turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. In 1871 he purchased his present farm of 300 acres, which is well improved with fine residence and situated in Pendleton. November 2, 1870, he was united in marriage with Fannie Barbour, a daughter of William E. and Harriet Barbour, of Henry County. Mr. Coleman and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal CHurch South. Thomas Coleman, Sr., was married first to Miss Mary Taylor, and by her had two children; after her death he married Miss Mary Ward, having two children, of which latter two, Thomas, our subject, was the younger.
