Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. LAWSON E. BROWN was born in Clark County, Ky., March 26, 1818, to William W. and Sarah (Staples) Brown, natives of Virginia. His grandfather, Swanson Brown, came from Scotland, served as a soldier eight years in the French and Revolutionary wars; was at Braddock's defeat, and lived to be one hundred and one years of age. On the maternal side Mr. Brown is of Scotch-Irish extraction. When a child he was taken from Clark to Bracken County, and at fifteen years of age was apprenticed, at Newport, Ky., and served three years in learning carpentering. He then went to Mason County and erected the first house at Sardis; in 1842 he went to Covington, and abandoned his trade in 1844 for the study of dentistry. He moved to Shelby County in 1846, and to Eminence, Henry County, in April, 1851, being the first person to settle in the last named place. He was married January 7, 1841, to Miss Mary Watson, of Mason County, who died November 25, 1847, the mother of three children: Sarah J., Liddie Ann and Mollie. January 14, 1851, Mr. Brown married Miss Carrie O. Forbes, a native of Henry County and daughter of B. M. and Mary (Neal) Forbes, born respectively in Henry and Jessamine Counties, and to this union have been born two children: W. Curtis and Florence. Since the age of twenty-one the Doctor has been a Free Mason and an Odd Fellow, and he is also a member of the Baptist Church. He is remarkably well preserved, has never been ill, and has never had a tooth extracted. He has been a member of the board of trustees of his town for twenty-seven years, has been a member of the Eminence Cemetery Board for twenty-three years, and chairman of the supervising committee during all that time, and still is in both boards. He was a member of the board of directors of the Eminence Agricultural Fair for twenty-one years, of the Shelby County Agricultural Fair directors for twelve years, and of the agricultural association of the State for seven years--part of this time in all of the three. He was identified with a company of business men of his vicinity, engaged in importing improved cattle, sheep and swine from abroad, and was the principal purchasing member, making thirty trips to the Dominion of Canada for the purpose of selecting, buying and bringing such stock to the State, and the impression of these importations is now seen in the marked degree of improvement in the live stock of his own and adjoining counties.
