DR. WILLIAM WOOD BOWLING is a practicing physician residing in Hart
County, Ky., where he was born November 1, 1837.  His father, William Wood
Bowling, was born in Albemarle County, Va., February 19, 1799; marrried,
in 1820, Miss Martha Coombs, and became the father of three sons and five
daughters:  Samuel B. (deceased), Richard W., William W., Pamelia
(Alderson), Eliza Lester, Susan Wood, Elvira (Adair) and Mary S. (Gaddie).
 Martha (Coombs) Bowling was born February 8, 1804, and is yet living; her
parents, Aden and Pamelia (Williams) Coombs, were natives of Virginia, and
later residents of Hardin, now Hart County.  William Wood Bowling was a
farmer, and died June 22, 1863; his parents, Jonathan and Susan Wood
Bowling, were of English extraction, and natives of Albemarle County, Va. 
The former was born May 22, 1767, and the latter November 10, 1877.  They
were married in Albemarle County, Va., moved to Kentucky as early as 1804,
and located in Hardin County (now Hart).  William W. Bowling received a
fair common school education while residing at home.  In 1859 he entered
the Columbia College, in Adair County; he continued in school until the
beginning of the civil war, when he entered the army, and for two years
served under Gen. S. B. Buckner, and afterward under Gen. John A. Morgan. 
He was captured with others of Morgan's command on their raid into Ohio.
He was held a prisoner of war until the fall of the Confederacy, when he
returned home.  He taught school and read medicine, and, in 1868, entered
the medical department of the University of Louisville, from which he
graduated in 1871.  He also attended, in 1885, the New York Polyclinic
School of Practical Medicine and Surgery.  His marriage with Miss M.
Ermine Doran was celebrated December 22, 1868; they are the parents of
four sons:  William David, born May 25, 1870; Richard Lee, June 23, 1873;
Curtis Wood, April 1, 1875, and Larry Burk, April 5, 1877.  Mrs. Bowling
was born November 2, 1849.  Her parents, David and Letitia (Handley)
Doran, were residents of Hart County.  The former was of Irish parentage
and a native of Grayson County; the latter was of English descent and a
native of Marion County.  The Doctor and his wife are members of the
Presbyterian Church.  He is a Royal Arch Mason in Gilead Chapter, No. 87,
also a member of the society of K. of H.  His farm of 193 acres lies on
the waters of Green river and is well improved.  The Doctor divides his
time between the practice of his profession and superintending his farming
interests.
