Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press. p. 105. Harrison County. JOHN TRIMBLE, judge of the "new" court of appeals, was born December 4, 1793, in Clark county, and died July 9, 1852, at Cynthiana, Kentucky. He was a brother of Robert Trimble, judge of the United States district court of Kentucky, and associate justice of the United States supreme court. When nineteen years of age John Trimble was secretary for Robert Evans, governor of Indiana territory. He studied law under the direction of George Nichols, at Lexington, and practiced at Paris from 1807 to 1816. Being appointed circuit judge he removed to Cynthiana. On the 10th of January, 1825, Governor Desha appointed him one of the associate justices of the new court. Assuming this office in the time of great excitement and under the peculiar circumstances surrounding the creation of the court, his actions and character were subjected to severe criticism and partisan rancor. He retained the office of judge of the new court until the legislative act whereby it was established, was repealed. He was a member of the legislature in 1826, 1833 and 1935. In 1836 he was tendered but declined the position of judge of the United States district court for Kentucky. Judge Trimble was an able lawyer and a man of excellent repute and noble character. Of the associates of Judge John Trimble while on the bench of the new court of appeals, William T. Barry is noted elsewhere, while of John Haggin and Benjamin W. Patton little is known. Patton died soon after being appointed, and Rezin H. Davidge was appointed, February 11, 1825, to the vacancy thus made. There is no record of any of these men after their retirement from the bench. During the existence of the new court seventy-two opinions were delivered, the first April 19, 1825, and the last October 28, 1835. Of these Judge Haggin delivered twenty-seven, Judge Trimble seventeen, Judge Davidge fifteen and Chief Justice Barry thirteen; and these are preserved in Monroe's Reports, Vol. II.* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Other members of the court of appeals, to-wit, Thomas Todd, Robert Trimble, John Boyle, Harry Innes, John Rowan, Thomas A.
