Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Hardin Co. ANDREW WATKINS was born June 18, 1841. His grandparents, William and Catherine (Wyatt) Watkins, came from Virginia to La Rue [sic] County, Ky., about 1800, and were the parents of the following named children: Samuel, Lethia (Tinker), Lucy (Lucas), Nancy (Brazier), Cynthia (Patterson), Catherine (Hodges), F. G. and J. Z. The eldest, Samuel, up to the opening of the late war, had accumulated 600 acres of land. He enlisted in the Confederate service under Morgan, but was at home at the time of the capture of that command. After the war he lost a large part of his estate in a lawsuit, and soon afterward, in April, 1875, died at the Anchorage Insane Asylum. He had married, in 1835, Miss Rachel Brazier [sic], a daughter of Edward and Nancy (Viers) Brazier, of Hardin County, and had born to him the following children: William, Edward, Helen (McCandless), Albert, Andrew, Granville, Cynthia (Phillips), Isabel (Boyd), Taylor, Mary (Boyd), Flora (Mudd) and Grace (Tichenor). His son, Andrew, remained on the home until his marriage, in October, 1871, with Miss Sarah Meirs, daughter of Elias and Elizabeth (Brooks) Meirs, natives of Green and Hardin Counties. To this marriage have been born seven children: Samuel, Lucien, Granville, Charles, Jerome, Alma and Laura, all of whom are living. Mr. Watkins first settled one and a half miles from Upton, but in La Rue County, on fifty acres; he remained one year, and then bought a half interest in the Eagle Mills, in the same county, remaining five years. In 1879 he came to Hardin County, purchased his present farm of 290 acres near Upton, now valued at $30 per acre, and has since been engaged in farming and grazing. Mr. Watkins and wife are members of the Big Spring Baptist Church, and he is also a member of the Masonic order. His first presidential vote was cast for George B. MacClellan, and he has voted for the Democratic ticket ever since.
