Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Hardin Co. JAMES M. RIHN. Conspicuous among the mercantile men of Elizabethtown, Ky., is the subject of this sketch. He is a son of Antoni Rihn and Sarah (McMillen) Rihn, and was born in Elizabethtown, in 1848. His father, who for many years has been one of the honored citizens of Elizabethtown, was born near Strasburg [sic], in France, September 13, 1822, but is of German ancestry. He came to the United States, in 1843, and first located in Pennsylvania, removing thence to Hardin County, Ky. For several years he engaged in the mercantile business, in Elizabethtown. Of late, failing health has compelled him to retire from active business, and he is now quietly enjoying the confidence and esteem of all who know him. He married, in Hardin County, December 15, 1846, Miss Sarah McMillen. She was born in Hardin County, Ky., December 19, 1824, and descends from an old English family, which was first represented in the United States by a member of the British Army, who, after the Revolution, settled in this country. She died December 21, 1871. James M. Rihn is the eldest of four children born to Antoni and Sarah Rihn, the other members of the family being Letitia, wife of W. B. Fowler; W. H. Rihn, of Louisville, Ky.; and Ross, wife of Charles Greer, of Stanford, Ky. James M. was principally educated at the Cecilian College, and early became a salesman in his father's store, thus acquiring a practical business training. He is in every respect a gentleman of refinement, and of literary taste, and takes first rank in the business interests of Elizabethtown. The family are honored members of the Catholic Church.
