Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Hardin Co. DR. JAMES H. OWSLEY is a native of La Rue [sic] County, where he was born in 1836. His father, Dr. William B. Owsley, for many years a physician of La Rue County, was born in Kentucky in 1802; graduated in medicine at Lexington, Ky., and settled in La Rue County in early life. He married Alice W. Morrison, a most estimable lady, who is still living, a resident of Elizabethtown, Ky. She was born in December, 1808, and descends from an early and honored family of La Rue County. Dr. William B. Owsley died in April, 1874. Dr. James H. is the fourth of their family, which consisted of ten children, of whom two died in childhood. He received a fair English education in the schools of his native county, and when twenty-five years of age began the study of medicine, performing the usual preparatory reading in his father's office. In 1864 he entered the medical department of the Ann Arbor University in Michigan, receiving the degree conferred by that institution in 1865. He at once located for practice in the village of Sonora, where he still lives, and where he has made an enviable reputation. He is an influential member of the Baptist Church, and an active member of Hardin County Medical Association. Dr. Owsley married, in Hardin County, March 7, 1867, Miss Leanore Phillips, daughter of Dr. D. C. Phillips and Mary Ann (Handley) Phillips, both of whom are honored citizens of Hardin County. The family of Dr. James H. Owsley consists of seven children, seniority of age as follows: David L., Alice M., Mary A., Genrose, Leonoro S., Jennie B. and Katie Sprigg Owsley.
