Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Hardin Co. JUDGE A. B. MONTGOMERY, of Elizabethtown, Ky., and a native of Hardin County, was born December 11, 1837. The family is one of the earliest in the history of Elizabethtown, the grandfather of our subject being the first dry goods merchant of that place. He was an Irishman by birth and came to the United States in 1792, settling in Baltimore, Md., where he was employed as a clerk until he came to Kentucky. He had but one child, a son, William W. Montgomery, who was born in Hardin County, Ky., in 1809. William W. was reared in that county, where he received a fair English education, and for several years followed the profession of teaching. He married Miss Catherine A. Brooks. She was born in 1811, in Fauquier County, Va., and came to Kentucky about 1823. William W. Montgomery passed his entire life in Hardin County, where he died in 1868 his wife surviving him until 1882. They had a family of nine children, but four of whom are now living. Judge A. B. Montgomery in his boyhood days attended the common schools, but in 1855 entered the Georgetown College, from whence he graduated in 1859. He then began the study of law in the office of Hayes & Cofer, graduating from the Louisville Law School in 1862. In consequence of failing health, he did not engage in the practice of his employment until the year 1873, finding his employment in the meantime in the pursuits of the farm, and doing service as deputy sheriff of his county. In 1870 he was elected to the office of county judge, serving in that capacity for four years. In 1877 he was the choice of the Senatorial District as their representative, serving with acceptance in the State Senate for four years. He is the senior partner in the law firm of Montgomery & Poston, and has an extensive practice. He married in 1866 Miss Mildred F., daughter of William B. Coons, of Fayette County, Ky.
