GEORGE M. CRESAP, a prominent merchant of Elizabethtown, Ky., is a native
of Maryland, and was born in Allegany County in 1837. He is a son of
Michael and Sarah Ann (Hoblitzell) Cresap, and descends from one of the
oldest and most influential families in that State, being directly
connected with Gen. Cresap, whose name figures among the Indian fighters in
the early history of Kentucky. George M. passed his boyhood days chiefly in
his native State and in Pennsylvania, and as a contractor in the
construction of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, came to Hardin County,
Ky., in 1857. Ten years later he commenced his successful mercantile career
in Elizabethtown, where he has achieved a well deserved success. He was
formerly a member of the firm of D. B. Staadecker & Co., but in the spring
of 1885 became the sole proprietor of that house. Mr. Cresap possesses the
qualifications of a superior business man, and his upright dealing,
together with highly developed social qualities, has surrounded him with a
large circle of friends. He was married, in 1863, to Miss V. E. La Rue,
daughter of Maj. J. W. La Rue and Eliza C. (Helm) La Rue, and has a family
of six children. He is a member of the Masonic order and of the K. of H.
