Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 2nd ed., 1885, Hancock Co. JAMES FREEMAN, Hancock County, was born in Spencer County, Ky., on January 23, 1842, and is a son of Nathan and Elizabeth (Bennett) Freeman. The father was born also in Spencer County on July 12, 1811. His father was a farmer. In 1849 the father of subject came to Hancock County and settled about two and a half miles from Hawesville, where he is still living. The mother was born in Spencer County in about 1816, and died in Hancock County about 1860. The subject was the fifth of thirteen children, of whom eight are living: Joshua, Amos, James, John R., Marcus, Sarah A., wife of Taylor Chambers; Louisa, wife of Silas Warner and Joseph B. Subject received his schooling in this county. He remained at home until he was about twenty-four years old, and then settled about a mile from where he now resides. He came to his present farm in December, 1875, where he now owns about 153 acres. He pays some attention to stock raising. Mr. Freeman was married December 28, 1865, to Miss Nannie A. Miller, a daughter of William B. Miller. This lady was born December 2, 1842, and is the mother of two children, one of whom is now living: Mary M., wife of Harvey L. Myers.
