Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Green County. THOMAS COAKLEY was born September 1, 1828, and is the sixth of the nine sons and one daughter born to Col. William and Margaret (Carter) Coakley, who were born in King George County, Va., in 1788 and 1791, respectively. Col. William Coakley served in the war of 1812, came to Kentucky in 1817, settled where Thomas Coakley was afterward born, six miles south of Greensburg, Green County, became a colonel of militia, was a slave-holder and farmer, and died in 1836, a member of the Baptist Church. His father, also a William Coakley, was of Irish descent, from the first family of the name that came to America. He was an inn-keeper and died in 1830, aged sixty-five. Mrs. Margaret Coakley was a daughter of George Carter, a carpenter, who married a Miss Smith, sister of Gov. William Smith, of Virginia. Thomas Coakley, after his mother's death in 1848, commenced farming and trading with the South. May 4, 1854, he married Elizabeth C. Hazelwood, a native of Hart County, and a daughter of Henry C. and Cassander W. (Moss) Hazelwood, natives respectively, of Dinwiddie County, Va., and Green County, Ky., and of English descent. By their union Mr. and Mrs. Coakley have had born to them eleven children: George H. (deceased), Emma C. (now Mrs. D. M. Williams), Sarah M. (Mrs. A. C. Webster), Willie J., Lee W., Cassander F., Mary E. (deceased), Florence E., Thomas E., Mattie S. and Eliza Ann. After his marriage Mr. Coakley settled twelve miles northwest of Greensburg on 100 acres of land, but now owns 500 acres, of which are under cultivation and improved with a fine residence. He also owns an interest in several other tracts, all accumulated by his own industry. Mr. Coakley has been a Free Mason over thirty years, was a member of the Grange, with his wife a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and in politics is a Democrat, having cast his first presidential vote for Franklin Pierce. Col. William Coakley was the only one of his name that left Virginia for Kentucky.
