Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887 Green Co. MELVIN A. BUCHANAN was born August 28, 1852, and is the first child of H.P. and Susan R. (Hutchison) Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan received a liberal English education; was married May 14, 1873, to Samantha A. Elder, who was born near Lexington, Tenn., and is a daughter of Rev. Q.D. and Winnie (Ledbetter) Elder, who were born in North Carolina and Tennessee, respectively. Rev. Elder is a Cumberland Presbyterian minister; after the war taught school in Burksville College, Kentucky; thence to Taylor County, Ky., where he has been engaged in active ministerial life, also ran a farm all his life. Mr. Buchanan after marriage ran a mill in his native county of Taylor, for two years. In 1875 located where he now resides six miles southeast of Greensburg, and ran a mill for two years, and for three years engaged in farming; in 1882 entered mercantile business at the same point, in which he had success; made a race for assessor on the Republican ticket in 1882 and was elected by a majority of one, and received his certificate of election, but contest was made, and the ballots recounted, and he was counted out by four votes. Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan had born to them three children: Monta P. (deceased), Gracie A. (deceased) and Carl A. He and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and in politics he is a Republican, having cast his first presidential vote for R.B. Hayes.
