BUCHANAN was born March 11, 1828, and is the second of two sons and five daughters born to Alexander and Nancy (Mitchem) Buchanan, who were natives of Augusta County, Va., and Adair County, respectively. Alex. Buchanan came to Kentucky between 1805 and 1810, was a millwright by trade and was a son of Alexander Buchanan, who, with his wife, immigrated from Ireland. Mrs. Nancy Buchanan was a daughter of Little Berren Mitchem, who was born in Virginia and was an early pioneer of Kentucky, a miller by trade, and who married Rachael Whalen, who came from Ireland. H.P. Buchanan, a native of Taylor County, received his early training on the farm. Received an ordinary education and at the age of eighteen started in life for himself at teaming, which he has followed more or less all his life. When he started the first thing he bought was a wagon. Having the wagon he found he could not use it without a team, which he went into debt for. At twenty-three he married Susan Hutchison, of Taylor County, a daughter of Steward and Mary (Avery) Hutchison. To this union were born the following children: Melvin A., Alice V. (now Hagan), Mary A., (now Hagan), Louisa C. (now Sherrill), Robert B., Lester S., Virgene B., and Jessie F. Mrs. Buchanan died in 1878, a member of the Presbyterian Church. For his second wife Mr. Buchanan married Sallie Moore, daughter of Thomas and Lizzie (Craddock) Moore. After his marriage Mr. Buchanan located in Taylor County, but in 1875 settled in Green County, six miles southeast of Greensburg, where he owns and runs a saw and grist mill, also owns and runs a farm of sixty acres. He was a Whig in ante bellum days, and cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Taylor; since the war he has been an active Republican. Mrs. Buchanan is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
