TURNER was born November 5, 1834, in Wilson County, Tenn., and reared in Davidson County. He is a son of Richard A. and Martha A. (Cleaves) Turner. The father was born in Sumner County, Tenn.; he died July 5, 1850, aged forty. The mother was born in Davidson County, June 15, 1813, and still lives there on her farm. Dr. Turner was reared on his father's farm, attended the school of the place, and later attended the high school of Nashville, Tenn. In 1854 he commenced the study of medicine with Drs. Wilson and Briggs, of Nashville. He continued under their preceptorship three years and graduated February 27, 1857, from the medical department of the University of Nashville. He then came to Fancy Farm, Graves County, where he practiced two years, after which he removed to Mayfield and followed his profession till 1862, when he was elected clerk of the circuit court, which office he held six years. He then practiced law until 1874, since which time he has been engaged in settling up estates. The past two years he has held the office of city judge. The doctor was married in 1859 to Miss Corrilla R., daughter of Judge R.K. Williams, who was circuit judge and later chief justice of the supreme court of Kentucky. To Dr. and Mrs. Turner have been born five children - two sons and three daughters. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
