Coulter, ex-state auditor and a leading politician of Kentucky, and ex-county clerk of Graves county, was born in Marshall county, Kentucky, August 15, 1861. His father was a farmer, a lawyer and once served as circuit clerk of Marshall county. Gus G. Coulter was reared on the farm in the main, gained a fair education, and in 1880 became deputy county clerk, by appointment, of Graves county; was subsequently elected county commissioner and then county clerk. In 1885 he became chief clerk of the state board of equalization. As state auditor his official record has placed him high among the most capable state officials who have ever served the great commonwealth of Kentucky.
