BRANTLY, Graves County, bridge foreman on the C.O. & S.W. Railroad, was born in 1844, in Crittenden County, Ky. At the age of thirteen years he began learning the saddle and harness trade. He continued in that business seven years. He then farmed for a time and later engaged in the saw-mill business. Subsequently he ran a stationary steam engine. He began railroading in 1881, and at the present holds the responsible position above referred to, which position he fills very acceptably. He was jailer one year in Crittenden County, Ky. He is counted among the worthy, responsible and well-to-do citizens of Graves County. Mr. Brantly is a thoroughly temperate man and carries testimonials from the highest authority as having given entire satisfaction to his employers as an engineer, thoroughly competent to run and keep in order either a stationary or a portable steam engine, and particularly cautions in keeping everything in good running order. He was married September, 1866, to Miss Fannie Scott, daughter of Dr. John R. and Sarah E. (Parmley) Scott, both natives of Kentucky. Her father is still living in Caldwell County, Ky. Her mother died August, 1878, aged fifty years, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Brantly have been born five children, of whom, Gillim, Johnnie and Jakie are now living. Charlie died September, 1878, aged four years; Bessie, the youngest, died in August, 1883, at the age of one year. Mrs. Brantly is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
