Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901,reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. HON. RICHARD WEST is a son of Charles and Margaret (Robinson) West, and was born in Garrard county, near Lancaster, April 17, 1832. When he was four years of age his father removed to Grant County and settled in Williamstown. His father was a farmer and also worked some at the trade of shoemaker. There were seven children in the family of Charles West. Richard West was educated in the common schools of the county and began life as a farmer and blacksmith, and located where he at present resides, having lived in Grant all his life except two years of his childhood. He was united in matrimony to Miss Martha Stewart in January, 1855. A number of children were born to them, but two of whom are yet living, James G. and Ellie West, both farmers. His first wife died, and he later contracted a marriage with Miss Harriett Day, who is still living. Seven children have been born to this latter union, as follows: Hollie Harrison, Martha Hanford, Charlie, Walter, Aggie Duncan, Napoleon and Ethel West, all of whom live in Grant county, except Charles West. In the main Mr. West has been a Republican in politics. In more recent years he has affiliated with the Populists, and is always for that which he believes will be for the best interests of all people. As a citizen he has always been liberal towards institutions needing assistance, and has assisted his school whenever opportunity offered. He is now one of the largest farmers in the community, owning in the neighborhood of 600 acres of land, near town, which is a good as anybody's, and is well stocked and in a fine state of cultivation.
