Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. WILLIAM F. WEBB, one of the most universally liked and one of the most useful citizens of Grant County is William F. Webb, an aged and honored citizen of Williamstown. He is a son of William Webb, an old pioneer citizen of the county. His mother was Elizabeth Gray. His parents were natives of the "Tar Heel State" and he was born and reared to young manhood in that state, and back in the hills at that. William F. Webb was born in 1829, and was the third child and second son in a large family. The children were J. H. Webb, now a prominent citizen and merchant of Williamstown; Mary F. Clark, wife of Bryant P. Clark, deceased; W. F. Webb, farmer and stock trader; George N. Webb, farmer; James P. Webb, farmer and justice of the peace; Joe Webb, farmer, of near Cordova, and Mrs. Martha Johnson, of Winchester. One child is dead, a boy, S. C., who died many years ago. William Webb, the senior, in 1845, desiring a better life, migrated from North Carolina with his numerous family and came to Grant County and settled in the vicinity of Cordova on a farm, built a home for his family and began to clear and make himself a suitable habitation in life. He was a man of sterling integrity, of good heart and much common sense. His wife was a good woman, and they brought up their children to be useful men and women. They lived and died, and are now buried in the village of Cordova. William F. Webb grew up on his father's farm, and early in life learned to hustle for himself. He became a farmer, and later a stock trader and a rehandler of tobacco. Some thirty years ago he located in Williamstown and here the active part of his life has been spend. February 21, 1853, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth D. Redd, of Harrison County. To this union a family of nine children have been born, all of whom are yet living. They are worthy sons and daughters of worthy parents, and have already taken a high place in the affairs of Grant County. Their names are: John A. Webb, miner and capitalist, now at Cape Nome, Alaska, digging for gold; Miss Sarah Elizabeth, at home with her father and unmarried; James W. Webb, prominent and successful business man of Williamstown; Joe F. Webb, farmer in Fleming County; G. S. Webb, sheriff of Grant Co; S. R. Webb, young business man of Williamstown; C. T. Webb, farmer, near Hamilton, Mo.; Hollie W. Webb, deputy sheriff under his brother, G. S. Webb, and Mrs. Mary Conrad, wife of Henry C. Conrad of Hamilton, Mo. For twenty years Mr. Webb has been the most active stock trader in the county. Every year he buys hogs, cattle, sheep, lambs, wool, tobacco and anything that the framer has to sell, and is noted the county over for paying liberal prices and for his strict honesty and reliability in dealing with his fellow man He is a prominent and active member of the Methodist Church, and is now, and has been for many years, a steward in the church. All of the Webb family from the beginning have been Democrats, and "Uncle Billy" is especially strong in his conviction, and is always ready to do all that he can to forward the interest of his party.
