Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. G. S. WEBB. There is no better illustration of the young man in politics and business than Sheriff G. S. Webb. He is a son of Hon. William and Elizabeth (Dean) Webb, and was born in Grant County on the 22nd day of December, 1866, and was the fourth boy in a family of seven boys and two girls. "Jack" as he is familiarly called, grew up in Williamstown, attending her schools and assisting his father on the farm. When grown he engaged in the leaf tobacco business, and for years was his father's confidential man in the purchase and shipment of leaf tobacco. In 1891 he was appointed deputy Sheriff under J. R. Lemon, who was then then the High Sheriff of the county and served two years, when he resigned to go West. The next two years he spent in the mining regions of Arizona. Tiring of the rough life and hard labor of that far Western country he determined to come home. Getting together all of his worldly effects he started on his long journey. All of the money he had been able to get together was less than $500.00, and strange to relate, while riding in the car on his way home, in some manner inexplicable to him, his lost his pocket book and all of his money. Luckily he had a little small change in his pockets and his tickets, and with this he reached Williamstown. The next year he and his brother Jim engaged in the leaf tobacco business, making a nice purchase and selling it out at a handsome profit. This was "Jack's" real start in life and the next year he was elected to the office of High Sheriff of Grant County, defeating a very popular opponent and winning the final election by more than 350 majority. He has made one of the best Sheriffs the county has ever had, and will not go out of office until the first day of January, 1902. In 1895 he was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Turley, at that time of Owen County. To this union three children have been born, only two of whom are living. Last summer Sheriff Webb erected himself a handsome home on Cynthiana Street, and is now residing in it with his charming family surrounded by everything that is supposed to make life happy. Jack is a fighting Democrat who never lets go until the battle is won or lost. He is also an active member of Centurion Lodge I.O.O.F.
