Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Grant Co. H. D. STRATTON was born in Ross County, Ohio, September 10, 1822, and is the seventh of a family of sixteen born to Eli and Joanna (Dewey) Stratton. Eli Stratton was born in Connecticut, emigrated to Ohio in 1804, and settled in Ross County. He was always engaged in agricultural pursuits, and died at the age of eighty-six. He was a son of Joseph Stratton. Mrs. Joanna Stratton was born in Connecticut, and was a daughter of Herman Dewey. H. D. Stratton was raised on a farm in Ohio until he was fourteen years of age. He then went to the State of New York, was educated at the Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn, and in 1839 commenced teaching school in Ulster County, and taught until 1840, then came to Grant County, Ky., where he taught for a number of years, and subsequently was commissioner of the common schools for eight years. He served with the Second Ohio Volunteers in the war with Mexico, under Col. Irvin, and had his eyes injured. In 1869 he was elected magistrate, and served until 1879. He was again elected magistrate in Williamstown in 1883. He was married June 16, 1851, to Miss Susan H. Penick, of Grant County, Ky., daughter of W. H. Penick. Three children blessed this union: Ruth, W. P. and Lizzie. W. P. is a prominent grocery merchant in Williamstown. The two girls are distinguished for their beauty and many fine qualities. Miss Lizzie has a remarkable fine memory, and at the age of thirteen committed to memory and repeated the Sabbath-school every word in the New and Old Testaments in five months. She can still repeat any chapter in the Old or New Testament. Mr. Stratton has been a member of the Christian Church since 1851. His wife and two daughters are members of the same church. He has been a member of the I.O.O.F. since 1844; has passed all the chairs, and represented the lodge at the grand lodge twice. As a magistrate he is popular, always endeavoring to cultivate a spirit of friendship and comprise between litigants.
