Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. F. M. SMITH. One of the loveliest homes in Grant County is located just north of the village of Mount Zion on the Mount Zion and Zion Station Turnpike Road. A fine farm of 320 acres laying on both sides of the Turnpike Road and in the midst thereof a beautiful residence, fine barns and fine stock. This is the home of F. M. Smith, one of the biggest and farmers in Grant County, and one of the best citizens to be found anywhere. Mr. Smith is a son of James and Mary (Franks) Smith and was born in Grant County on the 3rd day of May, 1857. His father came to Grant County from Lexington, and married here and raised a family of eight children, five boys and three girls, four of whom are dead. The old gentleman was born in 1804, and departed this life at his Mount Zion home in 1894, after ninety years of active and business life. Frank Smith was raised up on his father's farm and taught by the old pioneer to work for his own living. He was raised a farmer, and so remains to this day. He secured a common school education and has done many a hard day's work on the farm. When twenty-one years of age he started out in life to make his way in the world. He located at Mount Zion and began life as a farmer. Later he went to Illinois, and for three years, from 1889 to 1892, farmed in that state. Realizing at last that there was no place like "Old Kentucky" he came back to his "native heath" and bought the John T. McClure farm at Mount Zion for $17,500, and there he lives today in peace, quiet and plenty. He has taken high rank as a farmer and stock raiser; sheep, fine shorthorns, mules and horses are bred and raised on his farm. He raises for the market and sells the choicest products to breeders. On his farm proper he raises tobacco, wheat, corn, oats, hay and fruit, and is one of the most successful farmers in the state. His farm is dotted with fine barns, all full to overflowing with hay and feed. September 24, 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary B. Conrad, a daughter of William G. Conrad, and a sister of the Hon. J. C. B. Conrad, of Dry Ridge. To this union four children have been born, three boys and one girl. The children's names are William Carl, Lena Pearl, James Hobert and Francis H. Mr. Smith is giving all of his children a fine education, first at the common schools and next at some business college. His oldest son, who is now grown, has already taken a degree at the Lexington Business College, and his oldest daughter has been two terms at the Walton High School and two terms at the Millersburg Female Seminary, and will shortly graduate. Frank Smith is not only one of the best farmers in Grant County, but is one of her best citizens. He has been a Democrat all his life, and takes a very active interest in politics.
