Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. J. W. SHIELDS. The Oak Ridge country has produced many good men who have made their impression on the people of Grant County and have won honor and distinction in the political and business world. Of all of the deserving men who have come from that section of the county none have been and are more deserving than J. W. Shields. Born on his father's farm, on which he still resides, on the 30th day of April, 1858, and being the oldest son in a large family of children, his opportunity in life for education and a start in the world was none of the best. But these obstacles did not deter him. The common schools of the neighborhood were open to his ambitious mind at least three months in the year, and when he came to his majority he had a fairly good education and was possessed of abundant industry and plunk. He began life as a farmer and has continued a tiller of the soil to this day. In 1881, on June the 30th, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy A. Burroughs, daughter of L. E. Burroughs, and to them three children have been born. Mr. Shields is a Republican in politics, and for many years has stood high in the councils of his party. One term he served his party and the people of this magisterial district as their member of the Fiscal Court, and for three years was a gauger and store-keeper in the revenue service under Harrison's administration. He is a working member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church, and for a number of years has been one of its deacons, and has done as much as any other one member to build up and make it the prosperous church that is has grown to be in these later years. He is a working member of the Knights of Pythias and belongs to the Uniformed Rank Old Kentucky Home Company. It has been whispered around lately that Mr. Shields may be the nominee of the Republican party for County Judge next November. He is very popular with his party and the people in the vicinity where he resides. Shields Burroughs = none http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/grant/shields.jw.txt
