Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. J. B. O'NEAL. Grant County has not within her borders a nobler man, a more perfect gentleman, or a better citizen, than J. B. O'Neal. He was born in Carroll County October 2, 1856. He is of Irish descent, as his name indicates, and is glad of it, too. His father was a plasterer, and under his tutelage he learned that trade. John worked on a farm most of his life, save a brief time spent as clerk in a store. In February, 1887, he leased the old Hogan homestead, one mile south of Dry Ridge, and moved from Carroll County there. He rented the farm for six consecutive years and then bought it, paying $81 per acre for the land. He has since been offered $100 per acre for it. By this observation we note that John has been a very successful farmer, and that when Carroll County lost one of her best citizens Grant gained one. February 5, 1885, he was married to Miss Anna Hatcher, a noble Christian lady, of the county of Carroll. Only two children have been born to them, one of whom is yet living, a charming girl (Edith), 14 years of age, who is the pride and joy of the household. While Mr. O'Neal has been a hard-working man, his labor has not been in vain, for his is now on "easy street" in life. He and his good wife are both members of the Dry Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, and have been for many years, and both are workers in the cause of religion and humanity, and never let an opportunity go by to do good. He is a Mason and and Odd Fellow, and no man in either order is in better standing. In politics Mr. O'Neal is a Democrat, and was prevailed upon by the Democrats of the First district to make the race for magistrate next November. While the district is close politically, his friends entertain high hopes of him winning. While a strong partisan and a man who has never "scratched" he is yet conservative, and never offered any man an insult in his life, or abused one of any party for differing from him.
