JOHN D. LAWLESS.  For more than fifty years John D. Lawless has been a
fixture in Williamstown.  There is not a man, woman or child in all this
part of the world that does not know him or know of him.  He is the sole
survivor in Grant county of the famous Lopez expedition to Cuba, in
1847, which had so many adventures and underwent so many hardships and
disasters.  Later in life John served in the Civil War as a Union soldier.
He is growing very old and time has softened his disposition and made
more congenial his harsh nature.
