Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. L. M. GROSS. Grant County has been especially kind to her young men, and has put them in places of much responsibility at a very early age. L. M. Gross, the County Court Clerk of Grant County, was born December 31, 1874, and is not yet twenty-seven years of age, while he has served as County Court Clerk of Grant County for nearly four years. He was born in Owen County, Kentucky, and attended the common schools of that part of the world, and there acquired most of his education. His father was W. B. Gross and his mother was Elizabeth (O'Banion) Gross. After finishing his common school course he entered the Calhoon Business College at Lexington, and graduated therein and became very proficient in all manner of commercial business. This was a Lexington, Kentucky. After finishing his course in college he came to Williamstown and took a position as deputy in the office of E. D. Webster, then clerk of the Grant County Court. Here he learned every detail of the business until he became one of the best clerks in the state. In 1887 he became a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the office of County Court Clerk, and after a long and hard fight against half a dozen of the best and most popular Democrats in the county, secured the nomination by a good majority. He is serving his first term. His proficiency in the office is proverbial. He is an expert with a pen, and absolutely accurate in figures, and today there is not a more accurate or proficient County Court Clerk in the State of Kentucky. Clever, sociable and agreeable, with plenty of ability to do anything that comes along; Mr. Gross certainly has a bright future before him. Some years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Effie Lemon, daughter of John A. Lemon, and to them one child has been born. He lives in an elegant home on North Main Street. Mr. Gross is an active secret society man. He is a member of the K. of P. and Red Men at Dry Ridge.
