FERDINAND BURCH (or Fred, as he is better know) was born July 14, 1836, in Burg, on the river Mozell, in Prussia. He emigrated to this country with his parents in 1847, locating in Michigan, where he resided for nine years, after which he moved to St. Paul, Minn. In 1845 he moved to Grant County, where he has since resided. On the 26th day of April, 1860, he was united in marriage to Miss Susan Burnett. This union was blessed with eleven children, four of whom are living--one son and three daughters--Mrs. A. C. White and Mrs. A. L. Sides, who now reside in Waynesville, O., [sic] and Miss Susie and Mr. Mathew Burch, of this city. Mr. Burch enlisted in the United States service at Covington, Ky, August 27, 1864, as a private of Company B, Fifty-third Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, under Captain Henry F. Falls and Colonel C. J. True. He was promoted to Sergeant and Second Lieutenant March 21, 1865, and detailed in charge of 90 men for special service at Richmond, Ky. He was honorably discharged at Louisville, September 15, 1865; is Past Commander of Thomas Rankin Post, No. 182 G.A.R., Department of Kentucky. His brother, Michael, served in the First Regiment Louisiana U.S.A., and was wounded at Port Hudson July 9, 1863.
