JAMES P. BROWN.  One of the most successful farmers that has ever lived
in Grant County is James P. Brown, of the Dry Ridge neighborhood.  The 
old saying that success in life "comes to him who the most deserves it" 
has been fully illustrated and demonstrated in the life of James P. 
Brown.  He had many a hard struggle in the world before he got a firm 
foothold and began to climb.  After the war was over, in which he 
served as Confederate soldier for a time, he contracted a marriage with 
Miss Celia Percival, April 27, 1865, in Belle [sic] County, Kentucky.  
He immediately took his young bride back to his native state of 
Virginia, where they remained for three years, but seeing but little 
chance to better his condition in the old state he migrated to Kentucky 
and for two years lived in Boone County and worked on a farm as a hired 
hand.  Then he moved to Grant and leased a farm in the woods from Dr. 
S. S. Scott.  After four years of the hardest kind of toil he took his 
savings and went back to the county of Boone and bought a small farm.  
Later he returned to Grant and bought a large farm of 265 acres from 
Hubbard H. Smith.  In buying this farm he went into debt $5,500.00 and 
paid every dollar of it in three years.  That was in the palmy days of 
tobacco raising, with new ground, big crops and fine prices.  Mr. 
Brown's next move was to the farm where he now lives, which he bought 
and paid for and afterward bought a great deal more in the neighborhood,
until he became a very large land owner and a wealthy citizen.  He owns 
a fine place and a beautiful residence at this day, but has given each 
one of his eleven children $500.00 each, and sickness in his family in 
the last few years has swept away some of his former savings.  His wife 
has raised for him eleven children, two of whom are dead.  Their names 
are Kirtley Brown, who died June 22, 1899, and Maggie Brown, who died 
May 26, 1900, aged 17 years.  His living children are J. J. Brown, who
married the daughter of R. H. Childers; J. C. Brown, who married the
daughter of J. S. Carter; J. F. Brown, who married the daughter of W. T.
Riley; Amanda J. Brown, who married a son of R. H. Childers; J. H.
Brown, who is now in California for his health and unmarried; W. M. 
Brown, who has been a regular soldier in the Philippines, but who has 
been sent home recently, and who was mustered out of the service on the 
26th day of May, and the three young children, who are at home, to-wit: 
H. T. Brown, Nellie D. Brown and R. C. Brown.  James P. Brown is a man 
with a big heart, generous and kind to his family, indulgent to his 
children and kindly hearted to all the world.  His home is one of the 
happiest in the county as well as one of the best.
