Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. JOHN U. ALLPHIN was born June 12, 1871, in Kenton County, two miles north of Crittenden. He is the eldest son of Ransom and Nannie Allphin. When John was five years of age his father removed to Mason, in Grant County. John secured his education in the common schools of the county, except that he attended college one year. He followed the farm until he was about grown. At the age of 18 he was appointed agent for the Cincinnati Southern Railway at Bracht Station, which position he held two years. He also was brakeman on the Cincinnati Southern for about a year, and later represented the Singer Sewing Machine Company in this locality. John is Postmaster under the present Republican administration, and has proved efficient in the performance of every duty. He is quite popular with all parties, and will likely hold his position four more years. He has recently built a new storeroom in Crittenden, into which he has put a large stock of groceries and in which the post office is also located. He is building up an excellent trade, which is steadily growing. Mr. Allphin was married a few years ago to Miss Mattie C. Curtis, a charming and cultivated lady of Maderia, Ohio. A sweet little baby girl has come to fill their cup of connubial bliss to overflowing, and they are as happy as any people on this earth have a right to be. In religion John Allphin is a Methodist, and is a working member. He belongs to the F. & A. M. Lodge at Crittenden, and is a man of considerable influence in the order.
