KENTUCKY: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin & Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887 Garrard Co. HON. WILLIAM BERKELE was born January 1, 1826, in Hesse Darmstadt, removed with his parents to the United States in 1838, located at New Haven, Conn., where he grew to manhood, and in March, 1865, settled at Bryantsville, Garrard County, Ky., where he has since resided. In 1862 he was appointed sutler of the Eleventh Connecticut Regiment while in North Carolina; came west with Gen. Burnside in 1863 as sutler at headquarters, and in the spring of the same year was appointed post sutler at Camp Nelson, where he remained until the close of the war. His father, Michael Berkele, was born October 23, 1795, and died at New Haven February 27, 1863. He married Loisa Wilhelmina Rushstein (born March 14, 1796), and from their union sprang Barbara (Shumaker), Josephine (Klose), William, Mary (Mairer), Margaret (Heinz), Louis H., Charles, John and Henry. William Berkele first married Rebecca, daughter of Albert Alling of Orange, Conn., and to them were born Louisa, Nettie M. (Jean) and William A. In 1867 he married Mrs. Mary Campbell, daughter of Dr. Benjamin Mullins, of Garrard County, Ky. (born September 22, 1838), and their union has been favored by the birth of Daisey and Eugene (twins). In youth Mr. Berkele learned the tailor's trade, which business he followed until the commencement of the war. Since the war he has been engaged in the mercantile business, two years at Nicholasville and ten years at Bryantsville with success. In 1883 he erected a new distillery on the Lexington and Danville pike, at Rocky Springs, three miles from Danville in Boyle County. Since 1868 he has been successfully engaged in distilling in Garrard and Boyle Counties, manufacturing the old style, hand-made sour mash whiskies, known as the Berkele and E.H. Chase & co. brands. He is also a farmer, having 325 acres of well improved land, upon which he grazes cattle and sheep, stall feeding about 100 head annually. Mr. Berkele has served two terms in the Legislature of Kentucky; has been four times elected magistrate and a member of the court of claims of Garrard County; was a delegate in 1872 to the National Republican Convention and an alternate in 1880. He is a commissioner of the Deaf and Dumb Institution of the State and treasurer of the Danville, Lancaster and Nicholasville Turnpike. He is a Knight Templar and in politics is a Republican.
