JOSEPH T. SPENCER, a native of Gallatin County, Ky., was born April 5,
1839. His father, William Spencer, also a native of Gallatin County and a
farmer by occupation, married Elizabeth Elliston, of Grant County, a
daughter of James and Nancy (Jones) Elliston, who bore him two sons, the
subject of this sketch being the younger.  Joseph Spencer, grandfather of
our subject, a native of Gallatin County, took part in the war of 1812,
under command of Col. Richard Johnston; he participated in the battles of
Tippecanoe, Fort Meigs and others.  Joseph T. Spencer was educated in the
common schools of his native county, and has always followed farming; he
owns 165 acres of land.  In the fall of 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate
Army with a company of Gen. Buckner's guards under command of Col. John
Scott, and was in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain,
Richmond, Somerset, and was discharged at Gainesville, Ala., May 5, 1865.
He remained in Louisiana for several months, when he returned to Gallatin
County, Ky., where he has been engaged in agricultural pursuits, having
located at this present place in 1871.  December 14, 1869, he married
Miss Frances M. Ellis, of Gallatin County, daughter of William and Almira
J. (Wilson) Ellis, who bore him one son--James Wilson.  Politically Mr.
Spencer is a Democrat.  He is a member of the Baptist Church, while his
wife is a member of the Christian Church.
