J. W. HOGGINS was born in Gallatin County, Ky., in October, 1823, and is
a son of James and Mary (Hill) Hoggins, natives of Bourbon and Scott
Counties respectively.  James Hoggins, a farmer, was a son of Solomon
Hoggins, of Bourbon County; he was magistrate of Gallatin County at one
time.  J. W. Hoggins received a common-school education, was a merchant
in Ghent, Carroll County, six years, then moved to the county where he
began farming, and now owns 122 acres of land.  He has been magistrate of
the county since 1882.  In 1846 he married Leah Rice, of Gallatin County,
daughter of David and Mary (Cave) Rice, both of Montgomery County.  Mrs.
Hoggins died in 1865, leaving six children, all dead but Candance, wife
of Pepper French.  Mr. Hoggins married Mrs. Lucy Rice, widow of Lucian
Rice, of Gallatin County, in 1867.  He is a member of the Christian Church,
and is also a member of the I.O.O.F., No. 45. Politically he is a Democrat.
