Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Gallatin Co. JOHN BEARD, farmer and stock raiser of Gallatin County, Ky., was born in Butler County, Penn., May 16, 1817. His father, Robert Beard, also a native of Butler County, about 1818 settled on a farm in Gallatin County, Ky., where he lived until his death. He married Catherine Krazer, a native of Pennsylvania, and the birth of four sons followed their union, of whom the subject of this sketch is the eldest. The paternal grandfather of John Beard was a native of Pennsylvania, where he died at the age of one hundred and one years. John Beard has always been a farmer, and now owns a farm of 115 acres on the Warsaw Turnpike, three miles west of the seat of justice. April 16, 1840, he married Emily J. Morris, a daughter of John Morris, and six sons and four daughters have been born to their union: William Henry, John F., James H., Taylor F., Lucian A., George R., Eliza J., Catherine (deceased), Mary S. and Ella D. Politically Mr. Beard was formerly a Whig, but is now a Prohibitionist. He and his wife are members of the Christian Church. Mr. Beard started in business life with but a meager education, and having, when quite young, lost his father, the care of his mother and three younger brothers devolved upon him, the duties of which trust were faithfully performed until the death of his mother. About this time he married, and, still poor, but with good health and by hard work, began to accumulate the means through which the declining years of his life might be passed in comparative ease. In this task he was ably and willingly aided by his faithful wife. His business principles were based on cash payment for everything but land, and the golden rule of doing to others as he would have them do unto him, and above all, reliance on the Deity; and he has met his reward, as far as earthly possessions and happiness are concerned.
