Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. GEORGE SALENDER was born in Germany May 11, 1841, a son of George J. and Barbara (Schmitt) Salender. He came to the United States in 1853, landed at Baltimore, Md., remained there a short time, then went to Cincinnati, Ohio, and learned the trade of shoemaking, and also worked in a furniture manufactory until 1866. He then moved to Louisville, Ky., and engaged in bending chair backs; was thus engaged until 1871, when he moved to Frankfort, opened a family grocery and saloon and has been engaged in this business ever since. He is also a stockholder in the large brewery in Frankfort, and is the president of the company. He married, December 28, 1868, Louisa L. Fuhs, of Jasper, Dubois Co., Ind., daughter of Peter and Annie N. (Miller) Fuhs. Six children blessed this union, of whom five are living: George B., born June 10, 1870; Josephine L., born June 6, 1873; Andrew, born October 17, 1874; Florence E., born January 3, 1877, and Rosa A., born October 13, 1880. Mrs. Salender was born November 29, 1829. Mr. and Mrs. Salender are members of the Catholic Church. He owns a house and lot in that city, also a lot in South Frankfort. He is industrious, active, energetic and painstaking in whatever he undertakes, and is very popular with all who know him.
