Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. GEORGE A. LEWIS, editor of the Roundabout, published in Frankfort, was born in that city on the opposite side of St. Clair Street from his office, June 24, 1846, and is the youngest son of George Wythe and Mary J. (Todd) Lewis. His paternal grandfather was the late John Lewis, of Llangollen, a noted educator of his day, and the late Rev. Cadwallader Lewis, LL.D., was his uncle. George A. Lewis was educated in the best schools of the city, and in July, 1862, became a contractor for carrying the United State mail between Frankfort and Paris, Ky. In December 1864, he went to Lexington, where he learned the printing business in the office of the Nation Unionlist, published by his father and brother, G. W. & J. B. Lewis. In December, 1865, he returned to Frankfort, where he was employed in the Commonwealth and Yeoman offices until 1878, when he purchased an interest in the Roundabout, and established a book and job office in connection therewith. In September, 1880, he purchased the interest of his partner, and has since that time managed his business with ability and success. He was married, February 17, 1874, to Miss Alice Giltner, a native of Franklin County, Ky., and a daughter of the late Henry Giltner, a successful farmer. Mr. Lewis is an enthusiastic Mason, having taken all the degrees of the Ancient York Rite, and for the past eight years has been master of Hiram Lodge, No. 4, one of the oldest lodges in the State. Yet in the prime of life, with rare talents and experience, the future is full of promise for him. He is held in the highest esteem at home and by those who know him most intimately throughout the State.
