HON. J. PROCTOR KNOTT was born in Marion County, Ky., on August 29, 1830.
He received a liberal education, and subsequently engaged in the study of
law.  In 1850 he located in Missouri, and was elected to the Legislature
of that State in 1858, but resigned from that body the year following.
In 1860, he was elected attorney-general of Missouri, and was a delegate
to the Missouri Convention in 1861.  He returned to Kentucky in 1862, and
in 1867, was elected representative from Kentucky to the Fortieth Congress,
serving on the committee on mines and minings.  He was re-elected to the
Forty-first and Forty-fourth sessions of Congress, serving on important
committees, and acquiring a nation reputation, and continued to serve
acceptably in Congress until 1883, when he decline a re-election.  In that
year he was elected governor of the State of Kentucky, and still fills that
important position with dignity and ability, being recognized as one of
the most cultivated and representative men in the State.
