HANCOCK was born in Franklin County, Ky., February 9, 1821, and is the second son of Bartlett and Sophina (Dixon) Hancock. Bartlett Hancock was born in Virginia in 1787, immigrated to Kentucky in quite an early day, and settled in Woodford County. His father, John, was also born in Virginia, moved to Kentucky and settled in Woodford County, but subsequently moved to Ohio. Bartlett was a distiller for several years, also a farmer and stock raiser. G. W. Hancock was raised in Franklin County and educated at the common schools. He has been a farmer and stock raiser all his life, and owns a stock farm of 600 acres. He formerly handled trotters, but now keeps and trains racers only. He raised Leroy, who ran a mile in 1:42, and sold him as a three-year old at $1,000. Mr. Hancock married, January 4, 1844, Miss Eliza A. Crutcher, of Franklin County, daughter of Henry and Susan (Hancock) Crutcher. Mrs. Hancock died October 7, 1860, and January 15, 1868, Mr. Hancock married Miss Mary E. Frazier of Franklin County. Three children have been born to their union: Robert, George and William, all now attending Dudley Institute, at Frankfort. The second Mrs. Hancock died in 1873, and Mr. Hancock married, March 30, 1886, Louisa Duffy, of South Carolina, daughter of Joseph and Angeline (Marron) Duffy.
