Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. JOHN W. GAINES was born in Franklin County, January 28, 1847, and is the third son of J. Anderson and Mary J. Gaines. The father was born in Franklin County, and was a farmer and merchant miller. The paternal grandfather, also named James A., was born in Virginia, came to Kentucky in an early day and settled in Woodford County, but subsequently moved to Franklin County, and was educated at the common schools. J. W. Gaines farmed up to 1872, and then went into the saw mill business near Peak's Mill for two years, then was in the dairy business two years, then was constable from 1876 to 1882, then was sheriff for sixteen months, by appointment, and in 1884 was elected sheriff for two terms (four years). He was married in November, 1868, to Miss Bettie Noel, of Franklin County, daughter of L. F. and Mary (Long) Noel, and granddaughter of Silas Noel, a Baptist preacher. Four children blessed their union, and all are living: Noel, Howard, Adele and Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Gaines are members of the Baptist Church.
