Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. JOSEPH BERKHART was born in Baden, Germany, July 15, 1850, and is a son of Andy and Mary Berkhart. Joseph, with his father, came to the United States in 1854; landed at New York, where he remained a short time, and moved to Indiana; lived there eleven years, and then Joseph went to Louisville, Ky., and worked in a confectionery shop about five years; then came to Frankfort and opened a confectionery store, and was engaged in that about two years as a clerk for S. Fush; he then opened a grocery and saloon, July 12, 1883, and has been successfully engaged in that business ever since. He married Mary Gobber, of Frankfort, May 4, 1886.
