JOSEPH BERKHART was born in Baden, Germany, July 15, 1850, and is a son
of Andy and Mary Berkhart.  Joseph, with his father, came to the United 
States in 1854; landed at New York, where he remained a short time, and 
moved to Indiana; lived there eleven years, and then Joseph went to 
Louisville, Ky., and worked in a confectionery shop about five years; 
then came to Frankfort and opened a confectionery store, and was engaged
in that about two years as a clerk for S. Fush; he then opened a grocery
and saloon, July 12, 1883, and has been successfully engaged in that 
business ever since.  He married Mary Gobber, of Frankfort, May 4, 1886.
Both he and wife are members of the Catholic Church.
