BAGBY was born in King and Queen County, Va., February 22, 1836; was reared within thirty-five miles of Richmond, and is the fifth son of John and Elizabeth (Courtney) Bagby, of Virginia. His paternal grandfather, Richard, was also born in Virginia, of Welsh descent; he is of English-Scotch on his mother's side. In 1861 G. F. Bagby enlisted in the Confederate Army under Stonewall Jackson in the Fortieth Virginia Regiment, and was chaplain and general army evangelist. He was educated at Richmond, Va., and Columbian University, at Washington, D.C.; graduated at the latter place, as A. B., in 1855; remained one year longer, and in 1856 took the A. M. degree. He returned to Virginia and taught school one session in Hanover County; was ordained a minister of the gospel in 1858; in Westmoreland County, Va., and preached in Fleming County, Ky., from 1866 to 1870. He then moved to Russellville, Ky., and acted as agent of Bethel College; was subsequently appointed trustee and afterward professor; also had charge of two churches in Todd and Christian Counties, Ky., while connected with the college, and remained in Russellville until 1881, when he moved to Woodford County, Ky., and located near Versailles; was pastor of Glen's Creek and Mount Vernon Churches in 1884. He then moved to the city of Frankfort, and took charge of the Baptist Church, and has been pastor ever since. In December, 1857, he married Mary T. Courtney, of King and Queen County, Va., daughter of W. P. and Martha (Campbell) Courtney. Nine children blessed their union, seven yet living: Frederick H., who is located at Kansas City, Mo., and is an engineer on the Missouri Pacific Railroad; Theodore, who is in Kansas City, Mo., in the hardware business; Harry A., in Louisville, Ky., studying for the ministry; George F., Jr. located in Kansas City, Mo., and an engineer on the Missouri Pacific Railroad; Virginia May, in Virginia attending college; Leslie L. H. and Alfred Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Bagby and all their children, except Leslie L. H. (since baptized) and Alfred Paul, are member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Bagby is a Knight Templar, and belongs to Maysville Comandery.
