Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Fleming County JAMES M. HUFF was born in Fleming County, Ky., February 2, 1841, a son of William and Elizabeth (Stickrod) Huff, natives of Pennsylvania, his grandfathers, Samuel Huff and Jacob Stickrod, having brought their families from that State to Fleming County, Ky., between the years 1800 and 1805. During the war of 1812 Samuel Huff took an active part; his son, William, is a blacksmith and farmer, and resides at Maysville. James M. Huff was reared in Fleming County, and learned blacksmithing under his father; he followed the trade about seventeen years, and in 1872 removed to Ashland, where he was engaged in mercantile business until 1879, when he relinquished the business, and in November of the latter year established the Ashland Republican, which is now at the front of Journalism in Kentucky. It now has a circulation of 1,500. He also owns a fine job office, running six presses and giving employment to six regular hands. In 1861 Mr. Huff married Mary J. Donaldson, of Fleming County, a daughter of William Donaldson, deceased. The only child born to this marriage is Lizzie Belle. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
