Fleming County

JAMES P. HARBESON, a native of Mason County, Ky., was born in 1838 and is
the fourth in a family of ten children born to Benjamin and Mary (Paxton)
Harbeson.  Benjamin Harbeson was born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1810; his
parents were Benjamin and Sarah (Lawler) Harbeson, also of Philadelphia.
The father of Mrs. Sarah (Lawler) Harbeson was a soldier in the
Revolutionary war.  Benjamin Harbeson, father of our subject, came west in
1830, settling in Mason County in 1832, in which year he married Mary
Paxton, a daughter of James A. and Anna M. (Marshall) Paxton, of Mason
County.  The father of James A. Paxton was a native of Paxton's Meadows,
Va., and his mother a Miss McClung, a member of a family prominent in
Virginia and throughout the South.  The mother of Mrs. Anna M. Paxton was a
Miss McDowell before marriage, and a member of the Kentucky family of that
name.  Benjamin Harbeson was justice of the peace for many years, and in
1849 represented Fleming County in the State Legislature; he died in 1860.
James P. Harbeson was reared on the farm, removing to Flemingsburg when
twelve years of age, and receiving his education principally in the private
schools of Maysville.  In 1856 he went to Platte City, Mo., where he read
law with Judge Almond and graduated from the Louisville, Ky., Law School in
1858, immediately afterward locating in Flemingsburg.  In 1861 he entered
the Federal army, Company H, Sixteenth Kentucky Regiment, being promoted to
Major.  After his discharge he formed a partnership with Judge Marshall, of
Louisville, where he remained until appointed city judge of Louisville, in
1865; he subsequently was a candidate for the same position and was defeated
as a Union man.  In 1874 he returned to Flemingsburg; he is a Democrat in
politics and has twice been a candidate for nomination for Congress and once
for circuit judge.  In June, 1866, he married Mrs. Mary E. Shreve, a
daughter of Dr. Seth Shepherd, of Virginia; she died in December, 1870,
leaving one child, James P.  In December, 1876, Mr. Harbeson married Miss
Alice Andrews, a daughter of Robert and Amy (Thompson) Andrews.  They are
the parents of five children, four of whom are living, Amy, Mary, Charles M.
and Robert.  Mrs. Harbeson is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
