HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. by William H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979. Page 764. DR. JOSEPH M. KINNAIRD, deceased, was the son of a soldier who suffered with Washington at Valley Forge, and fought with him at the siege of Yorktown and elsewhere. Born in Culpepper County, Va., in March, 1793. Our subject spent his boyhood on a farm, attended Winchester Academy, and came to Kentucky while yet young. Teaching in Frankfort High School, he studied medicine with Dr. Brown, and afterward under Dr. B,. W. Dudley, a celebrated surgeon of Lexington. Graduating at Transylvania University during the presidency of Horace Holley, he began to practice in Fayette County about 1824, and continued for twenty-seven years a more laborious professional career than has probably ever fallen to any other physician during the same period. He married, December, 1826, Sarah E. Grant, whose father, James, had been a Colonel in the war of 1812. In 1827, he located on the "Ashwood farm," now owned by his son, and was able to gratify his tastes in the matter of fine stock, so that he became well known as a successful breeder of Short-Horns and Southdowns. Clearness of perception brought him fortune, decision of character made him powerful, while his generosity of heart caused his influence to be for the public good. For many years before his death, which occurred in 1852, he was a member of the Baptist Church. His only surviving child, James Grant Kinnaird, born September 10, 1827, has resided in the county all his life. Graduating at Transylvania University in 1844, he has since clung to the old homestead; is an extensive farmer and breeder of improved stock, and a member of the Christian Church. February 19, 1852, he married Lucy, daughter of Thomas T. Hayes. Of their children, there are living one daughter, Sarah G., and two sons, Joseph M, taking the degree of B.A., in Virginia, and LL.B., in Michigan, now practicing law at Rock Island, Ill., and Thomas H., a Lexington graduate, also graduating in medicine in New York, where he fills the position of Junior Physician in Bellevue Hospital.
